Simple Cures

Simple Cures
I'm not sure where I got these, they've been on my computer for so long. They're simple practical and use much of what you probably have around your house already!

***
Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately--without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers".

Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¼ cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-- even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes: Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer . If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409.
Insects drop to the ground instantly.

Smart splinter remover ....just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's tomato paste boil cure ..cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters... To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine ...a powerful antiseptic.

Vinegar to heal bruises .... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Kills fleas instantly...Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odor ...Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Eliminate ear mites ....All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear...Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief... It's not for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

Colors to Use and What They're Used For

Colors to Use and What They're Used For
In modern works color correspondences vary with Tradition, but regardless of Tradition there are a few "standard" colors, all others are modern additions. Nothing wrong with all those other colors being used, but to use those modern colors with a traditionalist Tradition isn't being "traditional". And to be even more "traditional", simple white candles were the easiest to make or obtain, the colored candles came later (well into the early 20th century).

Henri Gamache's Master Book of Candle-Burning, How to Burn Candles for Every Purpose introduced the southern Blacks to the concept of colored candles, who then adopted their use in every aspect of their Southern Hoodoo Traditions.

Black -- repulsion, dark thoughts, sorrow, freedom from evil

Blue -- peace, harmony, joy, kindly intentions, healing

Brown -- court case spells, neutrality

Green -- money spells, gambling luck, business, a good job, good crops

Orange -- change of plans, opening the way, prophetic dreams

Pink -- attraction, romance, clean living

Purple -- mastery, power, ambition, control, command

Red -- love spells, affection, passion, bodily vigor

Yellow -- devotion, prayer, money (gold), cheerfulness, attraction

Red & Black (Double Action) -- remove a love-jinxing spell

White & Black (Double Action) -- return evil to the sender

Green & Black (Double Action) -- remove money-jinxing

When putting together the spell or ritual the colors, concerns, symbols, offerings, etc. are very important so you have the right energies contributing to the work. Some Traditions also require specific Lunar phases, cast circles, etc. The Granny Witch is not one of these.

When a work is needed it's requested at the time of the need, and waiting for the next proper Moon phase may be too far away. Besides, the method of burning the candle can help with this if it is an important factor to the one doing the work. I'm not one of those who is concerned with these matters. I do a work when I decide to do it - which is when it's been requested.

"Spiritwork" is very much a part of rootwork. This is working with the Saints, Angels, some particular spirits in general. These are also quite often used with particular colors.

Follow-up on the Evergreen Balm

Follow-up on the Evergreen Balm
Oh, wow does this stuff smell awesome! It had the whole house smelling like an evergreen forest!

As I already had Granny Tackett's Healing Balm which I love, but it didn't have much a scent to it and it was missing "something" - now I know what, the warmth of the evergreens - I decided to combine the two recipes into one. Even unfinished I love this stuff!

I put the evergreens in a pot, added Granny Tackett's Healing Balm to it, mixed it up and let it heat slowly. It took about an hour for the evergreens to soften and reduce down.

I then poured all of it back into the jar, let it cool down, and put the lid on it.

I will leave it in the cupboard for at least a month, then I'll scoop it all back out into the pot again, slowly heat it up, and finally strain out the evergreens, at which point it will then be complete!

So, here's the final recipe for the balm:

Granny Tackett's Healing Balm
Ingredients
3 Yarrow flowerheads (minimum) - if dried, grind up; if fresh, cut into pieces
1 Heal-All plant (including roots)
- if dried, grind up; if fresh, cut into pieces
4 Plantain leaves - if dried, grind up; if fresh, cut into pieces

3 cups mixed Evergreens: Cedar, Juniper, Pine
1 tablespoon Rosemary Essential Oil
Emulsifier (optional)
1 cup Vegetable Shortening
1/8 cup Vegetable Oil (olive or sunflower being the best choices)
Mortar & Pestle
Small pot
Clean jar with well-sealing lid

Instructions
On a very low heat, melt the vegetable shortening & oil together.
Grind the yarrow & heal-all in the mortar & pestle. Most of it will powder, but some will not, don't worry about it. The evergreens will be fresh and cannot be ground to a powder. The same with the other plant materials if using fresh rather than dried.
Add the plant material and the rosemary essential oil to the melted oil in the pot, stirring to mix well.
Pour the mixture into the jar and let cool completely, stir thoroughly before placing the lid on.
Let sit in a cool, dark cupboard for at least a month, taking it out once a week to stir it up.

After at least a month remove from the cupboard, scoop all the balm into the pot and slowly heat up again. Once the balm is liquid again strain out the plant materials. Any powdered materials will probably remain, which is fine. The evergreens and larger pieces will be removed.
What is left is your now-complete Granny Tackett's Healing Balm!

Use for scratches, wounds, burns, as an ointment or on a warm or hot cloth as a poultice.

Here's the balm after it's cooled in the jar, you can see the evergreens in it quite clearly:

I'll update with another post when the final product is completed. :)

A Great Evergreen Balm Y'all Might Like

Here's a balm recipe that I found and thought y'all might like to try, I know I am definitely going to make this! I'll be gathering some pine & cypress from the woods this afternoon.

How to Make Evergreen Balm
by Kiva Rose

http://www.learningherbs.com/news_issue_78.html

There's a really good Evergreen Balm at the webpage above. I had it posted here, but the liberal, rule-loving assholes that own Blogger decided that I was "stealing" it. Never mind I had the ENTIRE ARTICLE, THE AUTHOR'S NAME AND THE WEBPAGE LINK posted here and a note before the article stating that IT WASN'T MINE, that I'd gotten it FROM KIVA ROSE. So FUCK YOU PEOPLE -YOU CAN KISS MY ASS!

More Great Appalachian Superstitions

If hawks attack chickens, keep a poker in the fire until it is red hot; then take it out and make a young girl tell you her sweetheart's name. The hawks will vanish. (Somehow I think that by the time all this is accomplished, the hawks will already be gone and your chickens with them!)

If a rooster crows before breakfast, someone will come for supper. (If breakfast occurs before a rooster crows - IT'S TOO FUCKING EARLY! LOL)

Someone is coming if a rooster crows. He will come from the direction in which the rooster's tail points. (Seriously, if this was the case, we'd have visitors all day long!)

If a rooster crows in the kitchen, a tramp is coming. (If a rooster is in my kitchen, it's time to move out of the barn.)

The scratching of a grey chicken under the window means bad luck.

If you hear a turtle-dove call as you are going up a hill, you will have bad luck the rest of the year.

It is a sign of death if you see 2 turtle-doves in a tree.

Wild geese flying south make the initials of each state through which they pass. (Wow, seriously?! In Virginia or Vermont, yeah. LOL)

If an owl hoots, someone will die.

It brings bad luck to imitate the hoot of an owl.

Tie a knot in your dress or skirt to stop an owl's hoot.

Avert the disaster of an owl's hooting by turning an old shoe upside down.

An owl will stop hooting if you pull your shoes off and cross them.

It causes bad luck to kill a raincrow. (WTF is a "raincrow?)

If you see a redbird you will get a letter.

If a redbird comes into your house, your house will burn.

The sight of a robin means someone is coming. (Not around here, they're here all the time - and nobody comes around!)

To kill a robin will bring bad luck.

If you put salt on a sparrow's tail, you my catch it. (If you can get close enough to get the salt on it, doesn't it stand that you can fucking catch it even quicker?!)

If a whippoorwill sings in a tree near the house, a death will follow.

A black honey bee is a sign of death.

A yellow honey bee is a sign of good luck.

Uses for Those Great Printed Fabrics

Uses for Those Great Printed Fabrics
There are so many types of printed fabrics on the market that are perfect for specific works that I don't see the point in being a purist and only using red flannel. Yes, it's traditional, but there's nothing wrong with evolving and why not have a fabric with money printed all over it for a money bag?! How fun is that?!

So, here are some ideas for some of the great printed fabrics you can find out there:

Money Print:

  1. Money Mojo bags
  2. Abundance Altar cloth for an Abundance ritual work
  3. Cut one (or several) of the bills out of the fabric and burn it to bring an end to debt and money woes or to bring money to you rapidly
  4. Money Drawing, Money House Blessing, and Money Stay With Me spells

Chili Peppers Print:

  1. Hot Foot spells for driving away a negative person or energy, an unwanted neighbor, or a love rival
  2. Fire power to add hot, rapid energy to a work
  3. Combine with the Money print to bring money fast
Dice Print:

  1. Gambling or risk-taking money ventures (especially the flaming dice prints)
  2. Choices-to-Choose-From works
Dragon Print:

  1. Male aspects workings
  2. Working with Dragons
Hearts &/or Roses Print:

  1. Love Come to Me works
  2. Mend a Broken Heart works

These should give you an idea of what to look for and how to use them. There are many, many more designs to be found in fabric stores, so just wander the fabric aisles, get ideas, and grab the ones you want to try out. These fabrics are usually quite inexpensive per yard, so you can  stock up by-the-yard or as little as a 1/4 yd to start out with. Your choice, but have fun with it! Let your imagination run wild!

Of course, if you don't have the funds to pick up these fabrics, you can always make your own! Here's how:

Need:
White/light fabric (cotton preferably)
Crayons or Permanent Markers
Iron (pre-heated, set on Low for synthetics, Medium - High for cottons)
2 Light-weight old towels

Instructions:
Use the Crayons or markers to color your design on the fabric.

Lay out the completed, designed fabric on a table on top of a towel.

Lay the second towel on top of the design fabric.

Place the iron on the towel and let it set a few seconds to heat-set the design into the fabric. Move over, but overlap the last place the iron was set, again let it set a few seconds. Do this all over the design. A design done in marker will take less time. The Crayon design will melt the colored wax into the fabric (as well as stain the towels - so don't use good ones!)

Once the design has been heat-set with the iron you can now put it into the washer & dryer on the hottest settings. This will set the design permanently.

Iron the fabric smooth and you're all set to use!

Granny Tackett’s Herbal Supply Cupboard

Granny Tackett’s Herbal Supply Cupboard
Most of the these herbs & plants I have in my pastures and wildcraft them when they are in season. They contain all the aspects I would need for any sort of rootwork I may do. Buying the salt, vinegar, honey, oils and bottles is the only expense I have when filling my rootwork cupboard. Buying these plant materials isn't the same as growing or wildcrafting your own. Those bought you have no idea where they came from. Growing or wildcrafting is local and so each plant contains the energies found in that area, which improves the efficacy of the rootwork.
