A Pagan In Hell

A Pagan dies and, to his great surprise, he finds himself standing before some pearly gates.

St. Peter asks him, “May I help you??"

The Pagan asks, "Where am I?"

Peter says, "You're at the gates of heaven."

The Pagan says, "But I don't believe in heaven."

Peter frowns at him. "You're one of those Pagans, aren't you?"

"Yes. I believe I'm in the wrong place; I'm supposed to go to Summerland."

Peter says, "Sorry. We took over Summerland, and it's temporarily closed for remodeling."

"What should I do now?"

Peter says, "Well, since we don't allow Pagans in heaven, you have to go to hell. Sorry. Just follow that path that leads downward and to the left."

The Pagan walks down to hell, where the gates are standing open. He walks in and finds beautiful meadows, happy animals, and clear streams of water.

He walks on in and begins exploring, and after a few minutes a courtly gentleman walks up to him and bows politely. "Hello, I'm Satan. You must be the guy that St. Peter phoned me about. Are you a Pagan?"

"Yes, I am. What's going to happen now?"

Satan says, "Well, the fishing's pretty good, if you enjoy that sort of thing. There's a little refreshment stand down the road. And I believe the Pagan meeting grounds are right over the next hill."

Suddenly, a hole opens up in the sky above, and a yawning chasm opens directly underneath it. The stench of sulphur fills the air. Hundreds of screaming, tortured souls drop down into the flaming pit, which immediately closes up with a thud.

The Pagan, hardly believing what he just saw, asks Satan, "And what was THAT ???"

Satan rolls his eyes. "Oh, just ignore them. They're Christians; they wouldn't have it any other way."

On the Other Side
A Wiccan Priestess dies, and is greeted on the Otherside by her grandmother.

After being settled in, the Priestess is given the grand tour by the grandmother, who shows her many places and introduces her to many fellow spirits.

They see Druids cavorting in sacred groves, Norsefolk feasting and fighting in a banquet hall, Buddhists chanting in a pagoda, Native Americans dancing; everywhere the newcomer is made welcome, and makes new friends.

Then the Priestess and her grandmother came to a large, dark, stone building, within which they hear the sound of singing. “Shhh” said the grandmother, with her finger to her lips, “Be very quiet.”

So the two tip-toe past, and when they have gone on a little way the Priestess asks about this curious building.

“Oh” says the grandmother “That’s just the Christians –they think they’re the only ones here.”

Redneck Pagan Charge of the Goddess
(Tune: The Beverly Hillbillies by E. Scruggs) (Lyrical adaptation by Hare)

Now listen to the words of the Great Star Mother,
In days long past called by one name or tuther,
"I am your Mammy, Queen of Earth, Air, Fire, Sea,
So you better quit your yappin' an' listen to me."

(Isis, that is...Astarte...Cerridwen)

"When the Moon is full, bright as a silver dollar,
Open up yer winder an give your Mam a hollar.
I'll hear you callin, jest as clear as a bell,
An I'll come a runnin an visit fer a spell."

(Circle, that is...Esbat...Draw down the Moon)

"Now y'all listen up, 'cause I'd hate to be a bitch,
When we have our shindigs t'aint none should wear a stitch.
Y'all will eat an' drink an' dance an' love, to show that you're free,
'Cause all acts of pleasure are sacred to me."

(Skyclad, that is...Great Rite...Cakes an' Wine)

"If you wanna know my secrets, then look in your own hide,
'Cause if what you seek ain't there, well, it won't be found outside.
The greatest Mysteries t'aint really dread nor dire,
I'm with you at the start, and at the end of desire."

(That's right, listen to your heart! Y'all will come back now, y'hear!)

Lesson 7: In-Memorium Ideas for Helping to Release the Grief of Mourning

Lesson 7: In-Memorium Ideas for Helping to Release the Grief of Mourning
This section contains ideas for memorializing those who have passed, whether a friend, beloved pet or family member.

********************
Ideas to Consider
Creating a funeral rite for a pet, friend or family member is a loving thing to do. Scattering their ashes in a place that was sacred to them is a beautiful way to honor their spirit. So is planting a tree in their memory, or making charitable contributions in their name. The ceremony or ritual should be appropriate to the person (or pet) it honors.

Anger, Grief & Mourning
Everyone grieves differently. One weeps, one rages, yet another goes numb. One culture requires sackcloth and ashes, extravagant mourning, while another expects a brave face and stoic dignity. All responses to death are legitimate.

A man in an Egyptian village lost both his sons in a car accident. Distraught, he took his rifle outside and fired it repeatedly at the sky. When asked what he was doing he replied that he was shooting at God. There is nothing wrong with being angry when someone dies. A grandmother was so furious with her husband when he died, at 59, that she ripped up all his photographs. This made her feel better. It is normal to feel anger at an untimely or unjust death, and this anger must be acknowledged and dealt with in order that healing may follow grief.

Howling grief is perhaps the only appropriate response to a child's death. You can literally write the anger out of your body, even if this means scrawling "Fuck God," or "It isn't fair" fifty times. Then take that paper out into the yard and bury it, releasing your anger. To some people it would make them feel better.

Closure is needed after a death to complete the grieving and begin the healing. Closure usually takes the form of a funeral, but not always. In the case of a murder victim closure may not come until the killer is caught and convicted. With an accident victim it may not come until the body is recovered, or the cause of the accident determined and corrected. Deaths without closure are the hardest to come to terms with.

Note: Ok, shooting a gun will most likely land you in jail, but I think you get the idea! And tearing up all the pictures of your loved one may be a huge regret later, so maybe photocopy them first and tear up only the copies!

Lesson 4: Funerary Decorations, Flora & Fauna to Consider

Lesson 4: Funerary Decorations, Flora & Fauna to Consider

Decorations, Food & Beverages, Music & Ambiance
Whether you want an all out funeral with the viewing and everything that goes with it, or you want just a simple memorial, the type of ritual and décor are just as important here as they were for your wedding (if you’ve ever gotten married). So why leave this to the family as well? Why not have your entire ritual ceremony from beginning to end already planned? It would certainly be easier on the family! Besides, if you hate daisies and they decorated with daisies because that’s what they liked, well, personally I be pissed….and there would be nothing I could do about it!

Now, if none of this matters to you, then don’t worry about it. But if you’re like me and you have very definite tastes, then at least consider putting together your own funerary rite, decorations, location, music, etc..

Ok, your location will pretty much determine your “seating” or not. It would be rather hard to carry a load of chairs to a wooded area. Conversely, in a park, it wouldn’t be so difficult, but do you want the public around for such a private affair?

Will there be food & beverages? Inside or outside eating? Quiet & subdued or ending with a party? Maybe a combination of the two? Will it be catered, or pot-luck where everyone brings something?

Do you like classical, new-age, or rock music? What sort of mood do you want to have? Maybe soothing at first and later move into something more upbeat.

A very loving project my sister and I did for my mother’s family when our Mom passed was to put together photo albums of Mom’s life with us, which of course, was after her growing-up life with them. This way they were able to see snippits of her life over the years, aside from the moments when she would go back for family visits. They really appreciated it, and we now each have Memoriam Albums of our Mother’s life that can be passed on to our kids along with all of the other photos accumulated over the years.

These albums and the photos others brought to the Memorial were placed on a specially decorated table with chairs so anyone could stop, sit, and browse through the pictures. That table ended up being the “center” of the entire day.

Another special table was where Mom’s ashes in their special box were placed for display. It was later taken to the cemetery and buried. The box was an octagonal inlaid music box that played “Amazing Grace”, Mom’s favorite hymn. We wound it up, placed it back in its protective case and buried it as we all sang along with the music coming from the music box. Even after it was completely buried we could still faintly hear the music box playing. That was very cool!

There really are a great many things to consider! So take your time, think it all through and begin writing it all down. Over the years you’ll make changes, tweaking it here and there, but at least you’ll know that you’re final event in this life will be what you want!
